a collection of things unseen

A Collection of Things Unseen is a series of collage paintings that incorporate acrylic washes and stitched layers to create dream-like narratives.  The works in this collection are influenced by literature and theatre reflecting a fascination with the way fiction portrays the human experience of reality. Within each painting the subconscious world unfolds like a fairy tale; a moment in time is captured as a scene on a theatre stage.

collaborative work

Irena has worked with her partner and artist Garth Tweedie since 2006. Their collaboration began with Praeclarus Flamme (Beautiful Flame), a series of canvases burned by Garth and painted by Irena. Garth’s medium of choice is a small torch which he uses to burn an image on unprimed canvas. This becomes a starting point for Irena as she adds paint, fabric and stitching to his work. Since their first collaborative show they have worked on several commissioned portraits together. In the fall of 2009 they began a series of paintings inspired by the photographs the couple took on their last visit to London, England. They will unveil their work at a private exhibition in the fall of 2010. You can see more of Garth’s work at www.thegarthshow.com
