about

Irena is a Canadian artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. She studied at McMaster University and Sheridan College receiving an Honours B.A. in Visual Arts in 2004. Irena has worked in various media including sculpture, printmaking, installation and textile art.

Currently she is focused on acrylic paintings that she creates using washes on unprimed canvas. Irena is also working on a series of London cityscapes in collaboration with artist Garth Tweedie.

“My art is poetry written in a language that cannot be translated into words. I strive to find beauty in that which is banal or distasteful by giving it poetic significance. Inspired by places and experiences from my past I construct ghosts of memories whose details are blurred, weathered by time and distorted by imagination until they are transformed completely.

Within my work I invent personal symbols and create surreal vignettes that speak of loss and hope, pain and love, and the beauty of the human condition.”
